And if you can't drink, cuss or dance on a table, then wouldn't everyone just buy alcohol at the store, forgo the bar and drink in their own houses where the fuzz can't touch them? Of course, they'd have to put up with Fat Larry, the local alcoholic, using their bathroom after last call, but at least they'd be able to call him an asshole after clogs the toilet.
Anyone seen the HBO documentary about The Atomic Bomb? I guess it's to be expected with the subject matter, but damn, that is some truly powerful stuff. Was utterly disturbing how one of the U.S. bombers had absolutely no remorse, not a shred. As well as how one of (I guess) the physicists, is so damn out of touch, that he had a big goofy (but ultimately harmless) grin on his face while talking about the whole deal. But the tales of the survivors? Memories of that day? Recalling loved ones lost? Disfigured limbs? Scars for life? The life-long leper-type treatment? Man, if you make it through that thing without welling-up, your heart is as black as can be.
You know what was tangentially really sad too? That (from what they showed on HBO) it appears that a large majority of the Japanese college-aged populace, don't even know what happened on August 6, 1945. Can you imagine your grandkids not knowing about 9/11? Really, can you imagine that? (And no, I'm not suggesting that what happened on 9/11 is anywhere near as close to as bad, and you can argue war vs. no war all you damn please, but I'm still not buying that at all.)
From the files of "You just can't make this shit up:" Running short on humans, robots, and Rumsfelds, our military is now turning to sea mammals. Yes, apparently the ever-popular War on Terror is now enlisting the help of dolphins and sea lions. No, really. Dolphins were used in Whale's Vagina in '96, "when they patrolled the bay during the Republican National Convention." Oh, and I bet you didn't know that "sea lions can carry in their mouths special cuffs attached to long ropes. If the animal finds a rogue swimmer, it can clamp the cuff around the person's leg. The individual can then be reeled in for questioning." Uh huh. Message sent to all you "rogue swimmers."
Personally, I think the military's just fuckin' with PETA. Who, by the way, offers up the money quote in the story. Says Stephanie Boyles, a marine biologist/PETA windbag, "We believe the United States' citizens deserve the very best defense possible, and this just isn't it." Right, that's what PETA is all about.
Anyway, I can think of much cooler animals to enlist in our military. I say herds of wild boars. Them's mean bastards. And how would the jihadists like fighting crazy pigs?

Keith Olbermann, erstwhile ESPN jock joker turned serious news-guy, is all growns up - and not a moment too soon.
While many news outlets used the 5th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks to eschew somber reflection of that day's events, instead to lull us into a macabre nostalgia by replaying horrific video of the day over a backgrop of melodramatic music, Keith Olbermann used the occasion to ask questions we've asked in this space many times before: Why has the country forgotten what actually happened at Liberty Place & West Street? Why has it taken more than 5 years to even agree on what will be built there next? Why is the gaping wound of Ground Zero still festering in downtown Manhattan? What happened to the spirit of non-partisanship and humanity that brought the country together in the weeks and months that followed?
We may be a few days behind the curve on this one, but if you haven't yet seen Olbermann's rant broadcast Monday evening, it is beautiful, righteous stuff.

Finally, an actual victory in the "War on Terror".
I'm sure you all know the plot by now the plot of radicalized muslims based out of London and Birmingham to carry liquid explosives onto a dozen planes bound for the US, supposedly today or tomorrow.
More details are trickling in now, including the almost Hollywood-like heroics of British Intelligence, including both Mi:5 (for internal British threats - pictured left) and Mi:6 (for overseas intelligence threats) in preventing what otherwise would have been a horrific attack against our two countries. Both organizations worked diligently together and with foreign intelligence services to cast a tightening net around some really, really bad dudes, and then finally dropped the hammer on them when they overheard a message telling the 24 to "go now". Let this post serve as a small token of gratitude to those guys, for saving the lives of thousands of people, including possibly several friends and business associates who I know were to be travelling from London to the States this weekend.
And of course, some information about the plotters have been released today. Initial reports paint a relatively idyllic pictures of "quiet" "perfect neighbours" who "loved cricket". However, at least a few of these "good mates" had already prepared their "martyrdom videotapes". The group even included several of English decent who had recently converted to Islam. And this is what really gets to me. Suicide bombers who grow up dirt poor in Karachi or Gaza and fall in with these Islamist douchepumps (while in no way pardonable) are at least understandable. I can at least wrap my mind around some poor, hungry dude being warped by the one group that hands them a kabob and some rice. However, people who grow up and live in the relative luxury and liberal (small "L") freedom of a London suburb plotting to kill several thousand of their fellow neighbors and countrymen - it's simply unfathomable. In an ironic twist, you can bet these cocksuckers will be hiding behind every common law right they are afforded as Brisith Citiziens over the next few weeks - essentially benefitting from the system of human rights that they plotted to destroy.
Also, this can not be the end of the story; as there clearly exists a large support netword for the pbombers - mosques, clerics, and other radical Muslim friends that have to be brought to justice as well. I hope the British Government doesn't lose it's nerve with such co-conspirators.
As for the 24 plotters, I hope they all enjoy a long lives dropping the soap in Her Majesty's Pound Me In The Arse Prison.

Bush and Blair were caught on a microphone in a moment they thought private this morning over lunch in St. Petersberg - here's the whole transcript of the conversation. The British press is having a field day with this - the cursing Christian - and as usual it's missing the point.
Much more interesting than Bush's choice of words or his choice to speak with his mouth full is the fact that the President won't commit to sending anyone to the region unless there is a possibility for a successful resolution.
Hopefully, for everyone's sake, Tony Blair can convince Assad and his douchepump buddies to "stop doing this shit" before things get really ugly, because our government won't even try unless the Boy King can look like a hero.

And in other war related news, the Supreme Court steps up and essentially gives the Bushies a firm little spanking. Yes, it's certainly a defeat, and yes it's certainly nice to see the drunk with power Bush have those powers checked, but it still strikes me as a fairly narrow defeat because how many trials were we really going to have anyway?
By the way, Justice Thomas knows how to speak? Obviously kidding, but pretty strong move (I guess) in reading his dissent from the bench.
