Presidential hopeful Joe Biden on Obama: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."
A black who can speak and actually washes his ass? Wow! Now that is something!!!
Chris Rock on white folk and Colin Powell: "... he speaks so well. He's so well spoken. He speaks so well. 'Speaks so well' is not a compliment!!! 'Speaks so well' is something you say about retarded people who can talk!"
Congrats Joe.
(Thanks BIG SEXY)
A classic unstated comparison separating those of us who belong in the house from those who belong in the fields! Why can't we get over slavery!

It was a complement. He was trying to say that Obama is not like the rest of them.
@Jackie how many times have you heard that you're not really black from a white person.

"@Jackie how many times have you heard that you're not really black from a white person."

Did you punch them in the nuts each time?
Posted by: daveNYC | February 02, 2007 at 12:21 PM
This is outrageous! Has Biden never heard of the Gumbel brothers?
Posted by: Jack Klompus | February 02, 2007 at 12:40 PM
Why does this make me think of Chappelle's skit "The Niggars" ?
Posted by: lattalayne | February 02, 2007 at 12:56 PM
"Did you punch them in the nuts each time?"
I too would like to know what course of action you choose when hit with this blatant insult.
I've never had a white person say no shit like that to me, them's fightin' words.

the only time us white folks say that to Jackie is after standing next to him at the urinal....
Now Biden has form on this if I remember. Didn't he say something about not being able to go into a Dunkin Donuts without being served by and Indian or something??
Posted by: bluehorseshoe | February 02, 2007 at 01:51 PM
Well, Big O, if those are fighting words, then Biden wouldn't consider you clean or well-spoken anymore.

-After saying a multisyllabic word such as "understand," Johnny will often follow it with a translation for my benefit like "Dig?" I am glad that he makes his big words accessible to me.
-Johnny always alters his given name and refers to himself in the third person -- for example, "J-Dog don't play that" or "J-Dog wants to know wusssaappp." It comforts me to know that my parlance has such broad appeal.
-Sally has a habit of showing me her running tally of the number of black people she greets everyday. I feel unique and special to be part of her statistical list.

I was listening to a Richard Pryor stand-up CD last night, and he touched on a "speaks so well" moment. He was talking about Leon Spinks and how it made him mad when white people called Spinks dumb. He said that a white friend of his complained about Leons lack of proficiency w/ the English language. He replies "well the language ain't his anyways man, I'd like to see how you do in Zaire muthafucka"

"the only time us white folks say that to Jackie is after standing next to him at the urinal...."

"I've never had a white person say no shit like that to me, them's fightin' words."

I get the "you're really not black BS" all the time. I always think to myself this muthaf*cka must be crazy to not see what I see.

"I always think to myself this muthaf*cka must be crazy to not see what I see."
Yup, yup, Jazz. You just make a mental note that said person is a fucking idiot and be on your merry way.

I've been called "one of the good ones" before. And, really, when they say that, all they're saying is "Your brothers and cousins? All n*ggers." How am I not supposed to get pissed at that shit?
Posted by: Maine | February 02, 2007 at 04:03 PM
"And, really, when they say that, all they're saying is "Your brothers and cousins? All n*ggers.'"
Along those lines, the one thing that really bugs me is when I get looks compliments based on skin tone. My initial thought in that situation is: "So, are you saying my mother is ugly because she's dark?"
Posted by: jackie | February 02, 2007 at 04:07 PM
"And, really, when they say that, all they're saying is "Your brothers and cousins? All n*ggers.'"
Yep that's what they are saying unconsciously.

So does this mean none a ya'll gonna vote for Biden in the primaries?
Posted by: lattalayne | February 02, 2007 at 06:34 PM
Of course not. They'll vote for someone smart enough to keep their racism in check.
Posted by: Bookman | February 03, 2007 at 04:13 AM
Personally, I am voting for the Black Panther candidate.
Posted by: SLaird22 | February 03, 2007 at 01:59 PM
Damn racist Republicans.
Posted by: Jack Klompus | February 03, 2007 at 02:39 PM
Wrong. You'll vote for him in record numbers because he'll be on the ticket with the guy who thought was so articulate.
You'll also learn that Biden is far from a racist and went to Senate as one of the youngest members ever as a civil rights leaders.
Some of you need to grow up and become articulate and well-spoken.
