Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena was freed by her Iraqi captors on Friday but U.S. forces mistakenly opened fire on the convoy taking her to safety, wounding her and killing an Italian secret service agent. Two others in the convoy were also wounded. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, one of President Bush's staunchest supporters in Iraq, is demanding an explanation.
A day of sheer joy immediately turned into one of absolute horror. An incredibly ugly incident amid an incredibly ugly situation. Sad. But as crazy as things must be over there, it still is kind of hard to believe. Shooting on your allies? In a transport that had to be big news? Sounds like somebody dropped the ball. Big time. Let the blame game begin.
The media has constantly told us that there is total chaos in Iraq. Why wouldn't things like this happen?

Maybe the fact the idiot driver "sped towards the checkpoint without stopping" after warning shots were fired had something to do with the attack. What if they hadn't fired and it was a truck bomb? Total blame goes to the driver of the truck. Our military did what I would expect them to do.

according to the italians there was no checkpoint so maybe total blame goes somewhere other than the driver. Interestingly the kidnappers predicted that the convoy would be taken out because the US was against the payoff by the Italians to get Sgrena out.
