
A-G-R-E-E-I-N-G. Yikes.
The scene, Riviera Beach, Florida. Riviera Beach is a traditionally working class and mostly black town. Despite its many fine features, water access, proximity to Florida's gold coast and transportation hubs, it has been a bit of a down and out neighbor to tony Palm Beach and West Palm Beach. Instead of fostering a responsible redevelopment plan that creates jobs and better infrastructure for its residents by using these locational advantages, the mayor wants to displace 6,000 residents via eminent domain so that a development company can build high-priced condo and yacht club. Many of the people affected by this act are owners of their homes and own profitable businesses in Riviera Beach; they are law abiding and tax-paying citizens and residents who have invested in the community. But, hey - the Mayor wants a city aquarium, so people's gotta go. You know Furious would be pissed.
At the center of this debate is the curious Kelo vs. New London, CT case ruled on by the SCOTUS earlier this year.
