Just piggybacking on Assman's post. Has anyone heard about the hilarious bigoted stunt pulled by Team Gasol? C'mon. Unless you're Chinese, you're laughing at this. And if you're not Chinese or laughing (or at least smirking), you need to go see a proctologist to get that stick removed from your arse. Whole ordeal reminds me of the South Park episode where they go to China to play dodgeball.

Let's also ban movies that use the word "retard."

It's funny not in the traditional sense like "Oh, those Spaniards and they're crazy antics!" It's funny because they thought it would be funny.
Posted by: Vandelay | August 13, 2008 at 04:18 PM
I think it's funny because I'm imagining the conversation that preceded it.
"Alright guys... we've been drinking wine all practice long and stroking our awesome haircuts. What do you say we do the slant-eye thing for one picture, then go to a topless beach and have sex with everyone within a mile? God, it's good to be us."
Posted by: Assman | August 13, 2008 at 04:44 PM
What's funny is the Spaniards' rationalization after the fact. "It's a sign of affection!" Yeah, sure it is. "The sponsor insisted." And if the sponsor insisted on photographing you guys engaged in a circle jerk, would you play along?

Sorry, just don't think it's all that funny. Not so much b/c of moral indignation, I just didn't think the photo was that funny.

Well, in my defense -- I'm easily amused and immature. There wasn't a non-Mongoloid kid growing up that didn't do that shit everytime they had a plate of fried rice and beef teriyaki kabobs in front of them. Some of us just don't outgrow the simple stuff.

Oh and by the way, Aaron -- why are you spending time responding to this? Don't you have some exercise and vomiting to do?

Not to stir the pot here but is this really that drastically different from blackface?
Posted by: Art Vandelay | August 13, 2008 at 06:54 PM
I laughed at it. I won't lie. I laugh at a lot of racial jokes, though. I have no shame.
Posted by: Newman | August 13, 2008 at 08:07 PM
Of course, "not Chinese" only describes about 14% of the world's population.

Yes. It is drastically different.
Drastically Different Way 1: We aren't known for oppressing Chinese people -- the Chinese government is. Historically speaking -- aside from Mr. Magoo and some 1840's California brothels, the Chinese weren't widely enslaved in America.
Drastically Different Way 2: The disgrace of blackface isn't only about a stereotypical caricature. It's also about exclusion of race (white people can portray black people on the big stage but black people aren't allowed). The Chinese aren't really being excluded because of race -- they're just being caricatured.

Very true.

I don't think anyone doing blackface nowadays would be like doing it in 1934. And didn't we put a bunch of Chinese and Japanese people in camps during WWII?
Posted by: Newman | August 14, 2008 at 08:35 AM
"And didn't we put a bunch of Chinese and Japanese people in camps during WWII?"
We did have internment camps for the Japanese after Pearl Harbor. Right or wrong, we were at war with Japan.
But I've never heard about such camps for the Chinese. But perhaps you're lumping them all together since they all look the same to you.

Mr. Magoo...nice. This has nothing to do with America though. If the Olympics were being held in Angola and the Spanish basketball team took a promo picture in black face, would it cease to be funny?

But we're not talking about Vaudeville here. We're talking about the Olympics and the last I checked, they certainly don't exclude black people.

I thought we just rounded up all the Asians.
And they do all look the same to me.

Hahaha! Wicked awesome, Vandelay.
As for the picture, I got a bigger laugh out of the South Park picture than Team Gasol. The Spanish Team's spin doctor sucks too.

I believe the Chinese version of slavery in America was the way they were used to build the original railroads like indentured servants. And the whole second class citizen thing (i.e. Bruce Lee not being able to play Cain in the Kung Fu show he invented because he's not white) that ensued.
To me, this is different from blackface in that this isn't happening in America and racial sensitivity hasn't exactly been Europe's calling card historically. These guys really didn't mean any harm or to resurrect any old racist sentiments that have perpetuated a cultural divide. They just thought they were being funny, even though, to an American audience, they're not.

So did Ted Danson.

@Vandelay
"We're talking about the Olympics and the last I checked, they certainly don't exclude black people."
Right, which is part of why this is drasticaly different than using blackface.
"If the Olympics were being held in Angola and the Spanish basketball team took a promo picture in black face, would it cease to be funny?"
Yes, because first of all, I'd still be in shock that the Olympics were bing held in Angola. Secondly -- and this is purely opinion -- the Chinese caricature is much more amusing than blackface. It just is.
@Assman
"I believe the Chinese version of slavery in America was the way they were used to build the original railroads like indentured servants."
No, those were contracted laborers who returned to China after the work was done. How they were treated is a different story But they weren't sold in shackles. The Chinese girls sold to the brothels during the California Gold Rush, however, were slaves.

Spain's infested with skinheads now days. It was only 33 years ago that it decided to throw out the fascist regime. European soccer says it all.

No argument is going to convince me that this is not racist. However, no argument is going to convince me that it's not funny, either.

Hello. I find it rather easy to portray a businessman. Being bland, rather cruel and incompetent comes naturally to me. Help me! There is an urgent need for sites: Anti asthma. I found only this - clarinex over the counter. Improves digestion; aids in fat metabolism, anti inflammatory. Zyrtec anti allergic asthma anti diabetic. Thanks :-(. Deverell from Vanuatu.

Early in August, we got a note from Monica Ailey of Homeward Bound Animal Rescue about a deaf pit bull facing a ticking clock in the Bridgeport Animal Shelter.
