A Devious Knot
Looks like the US military is off cannibalizing their own again. This time it's not blacks, women, or gays but atheists. Here's a kid who has served two tours, been shot at and blown up by every pissed-off Arab with an AK from Al Quaeda to the Mardi Army but now faces the worst threat to his life- asshole Christian scum infesting the Army. The abuse got so bad that command had to send him back stateside WITH his own body guard. All the while the Mullahs are screaming that this occupation amounts to nothing more than another crusade- I'd say they have a lot to worry about if this crap keeps up.
I understand that people turn to faith for a number of reasons, especially in a war-zone. But it's the height of hypocrisy to invade and occupy another country under the banner of freedom and unity while forcing your own people to conform to some assinine nazi-style christian coup. We're over there telling the Iraqi's that they have to move beyond their religious differences at the same time we're putting guys into protection programs to keep them safe from jesus thugs among our own ranks. If there's a way to fuck this war up more than ever before rest assured we'll find it.
Yet another installment of "News That is Surprising to Exactly Nobody".

Yet another polarizing installment of "we found some crazy fuckers in our military so they must be all like that so lets close this whole thing down and come home to some hot chocolate and diapers."
Makes me wanna chuck a puppy off a cliff.

Klompus, ignorance is no excuse for ignorance. As if you couldn't figure it out- the "problem" is spreading from the top down. Nice demagoguing Possum.

Phil, I mix a little Jesus with some rum and coke and BAM I get stacked jpegs- I love Sundays. Seriously, just change the pics you want to post by deleting the first and pasting over it with the next one- should work.

"As if you couldn't figure it out- the "problem" is spreading from the top down."
First off, I'm atheist. So I don't find the young man's account to be unbelievable. However, I think you're jumping the gun by painting this as some rampant military problem "spreading from the top down." It'd be like telling all street cyclists to eat a dick because one or two might have happened to be rude to you one day. What kind of asshole does that? Anyway, the only thing that's been established thus far is that he's been ostracized by his fellow soldiers. We don't know yet how much is truth. He sounds like he's telling the truth, but how do we know?
"Nice demagoguing Possum."
Explain to me how I'm demagoguing -- please.

Here's one example. It starts with training which is instituted which means this falls well outside the realm of "a few bad apples". When abu ghraib was going on people cited the "few bad apples" theory over and over. We know now that these actions were encouraged by high ranking officials- another case of directive vs random shortcoming. Secondly, the fact that this kid had to be sent back to the states because the situation was beyond the control of the command should raise a huge red flag. If the soldiers are dictating policy, which I don't believe they are that's why I consider a top priority issue, but if they are, as you suggest, don't you think that's a little fucked up.

That is because they are taking people from prison, AGAIN to meet body count needs.

Well, if you had to be transferred to a different state with a personal bodyguard to protect you from the cyclists, that might be one thing.
Me? If I were in his situation, I would just go with the flow, and pretend to be a soldier for Christ. I know it's not like he was out promoting his atheism or anything, but I'd still probably end up assimilating. I guess that makes me a little bitch.

I agree. Wow.
I would just go with the flow, and pretend to be a soldier for Christ.
I can see how this might be an attractive option -- I mean, if the guy is an atheist, what's the harm in chanting some empty words to a ghost that isn't there?
On the other hand, having to lie about who you are in order to not get your life threatened -- in an organization and country in which you're constitutionally protected from that -- shouldn't be necessary.
