Yeah, the guy was a monumental prick, but credit where credit is due, the guy was damn entertaining. (potty mouth warning.) That said, one is left to wonder if Knight would have ever sniffed 200 career wins, let alone 900, if he were a tan man pulling all the bullshit he pulled. (And no, Don Cheney's antics are not even remotely in the same stratosphere.) I also wonder how any talented ball player with a real choice would have went to play for this guy. Incomprehensible.
(Cue the music of retarded "race card" calls.)
Don Cheney's
Are you referring to John Chaney...the coach for Temple?
Anyway, what are you getting at here? Are you saying that Bob Knight made some transgressions that would have had a black man suspended for life? If so...what were they?

A life suspension is not necessary. A simple blackballing from top programs.
Think along the lines of Ted Nolan who would I feel safe saying is an absolute choir boy compared to Bobby Knight.
As for Knight's transgressions, you can educate yourself here.
And that doesn't even include the one about him threatening some old white secretary and throwing a pot at her or something.
Yeah, that shit would fly. No question.
(And yes, I meant John, sue me.)

Dude, you know that's satire, right? Most of that stuff didn't actually happen. It's like something you'd read on Page 2. You really think he broke his own player's arm at halftime of a game?
John Chaney sent a goon into a game to break an opposing player's arm though. That really did happen. He wasn't even fired.

I think the problem is that Knight had so much power before coaches were so scrutinized. With You-Tube, 24 hour media, and blogs; the stuff Knight once got away with wouldn't be tolerated today regardless of color. I don't think the tan man was given the high profile opportunities that were available to Knight when Knight started so therefore they couldn't have built up enough booster support and popularity to survice negative actions.

Get out?
"John Chaney sent a goon into a game to break an opposing player's arm though. That really did happen. He wasn't even fired."
You're kidding, right? Please tell me you are intentionally using sleight of hand bullshit in an effort to make a point.

"1993: Disgusted by team's 22 turnovers in road loss to Illinois, robs a string of convenience marts in tri-state area. Suspended one game."
Is this for real?? That list seems a bit exaggerated. Sounds like the guy was fucking funny as hell as long you were out of gun shot range from him.

I don't need to. It's a perfectly valid point. Most coaches would have been fired for that garbage. Hell, some of them probably would have even been arrested.

You completely mistated what happened. He did not send anyone out there to break anyone's arm. He felt the other team was playing dirty so he sent out one of his tough guys to play dirty too. An arm got broken in the process, that does not mean that Chaney "sent [him into] game to break an opposing player's arm."
How about the fact that an NHL coach told the whole team in the locker room that some guy had to pay and one of the dudes ended up breaking the guy's neck?
(You wanna say hockey's a tougher sport, fine. A broken neck is on a different planet then a broken arm.)
Coaches send in player's to goon it up all the fucking time.
Chaney was just man wnough to admit that he did.
Definitely not a fireable offense.
Plus, the guy gets major bonus points for threatening to kill Jim Calipari.

I don't know man. Coaches generally don't break down crying in press-conferences for doing something that coaches do all the time.

More sleight of hand b.s.. He broke down because the kid broke his arm, not because he sent some one out there to play rough. His crying is further evidence that the result is not what he had in mind.
An asshole like Knight would have very likely shown no remorse and got indignant when questioned about it.
Posted by: jackie | February 05, 2008 at 11:01 AM
I don't know. Part of me says he was a great coach, coaxing the best out of players that many times had less talent that some of the top notch opposition.
Part of me also thinks he made a career out of being an asshole.
Hard to argue with 900 "W's" though. And isn't that what collegiate athletics is all about?

I'm all about winning, but if had any hoop skill (other than being able to viciously throw down a tennis ball) and my parents somehow sent me to IU in '95, I think would be going on year 13 of not being on speaking terms with my folks.

Say it ain't so. I had you pegged for you at least being able to throw down a Baden mini-basketball.

That and the date rape.
