So last week, this kid I know who happens to be a local cop just "hit the lottery" as it was described to me. Apparently, he ended up chasing some guy after a B & E and eventually shot the guy and killed him. I don't know what the details of the shooting were. Anyway, the town has this crazy idea that if you're a cop, and you kill someone, you should never have to work another day in your life. He's relieved of his duties immediately and get's full pay and his full pension for the rest of his life.
Am I alone in thinking that this is a really, really, really bad policy?
I know I'm setting myself up for a heap of anti-Liberal bashing...but...why does a police officer need to use deadly force against a burglar?

Like I said Zib, I don't know the details of this particular situation, but given the policy, in some cases it could be so that they don't have to work another day for the rest of their lives?

Um, isn't part of being a cop shooting people? Should soldiers who -torture- kill someone be relieved of their duties? How about a garbage man who dumps a load of trash, a college prof who -plagarizes- publishes?

typepad sucks...

That's nuts. Talk about yer incentivizing the wrong behavior!

Yeah that pretty much sounds like a bad policy. And isnt there usually a somewhat involved investigation to determine whether deadly force was warrented. does this boondoggle kick in automatically

the cops should only be allowed to maim Burglars, not kill them.

The cop should remain on the job; he's TCOB, baby!

There has to be more to the story.
Otherwise, cop recruitment would be WAY up, half of the cops would last approximately 35 seconds on the job before they earned a paid retirement, and every would-be criminal in the city would be standing in a puddle of their own urine.

There HAS to be, right Assman? My wife told me the same thing. I probed as much as I could and this is all I have. I have a couple other friends who are cops. I'll ask them.

What if you are a cop, commit a crime, then shoot yourself in the leg? What does the town do then, huh? I've found the fatal flaw in their policy.

Art,
I probe my wife all the time and, if anything, feel dumber afterwards. Surprised you thought you could find anything using that method.

Thats one weird department policy if true.
My brother in law has actually killed two while on the job, one a wacko who was trying to hijack (w/ a gun) a school bus to kidnap his son and the other a drunk driver that was trying to run him over and didn't heed the warning shots (to his tires and his engine block), and he's still working (and is actually getting sued by the drunk kids family).

Puddy, provided that my wife reads this blog, I'm gonna have to lay off that one.

why on earth did it post 3 times?

M. Butler...kill is the operative term here, and, no pun intended, the fatal flaw in your theory.
Posted by: SL22 | May 17, 2007 at 01:57 PM
Ah, that is a fatal flaw.
